How do you know the best building materials for facades?
This week, a lovely newsletter subscriber sent in this question:
How do you know the best building materials for facades, like weatherboards? There are many new types available, but how can we be sure they're safe and will last? We've never built before and have more traditional tastes.
Thank you for sending your question in. It's perfectly valid to want to make the right choice when it comes to facades. There's a lot to consider in the short term (cost, design, availability of materials) and long-term (maintenance, timeless appeal, and durability of materials).
What to think about when using modern Building Materials
Your caution about new materials is perfectly reasonable. In my opinion, the new technology being developed for homes and materials is amazing and something to truly embrace.
Many new materials use plastics instead of traditional materials like steel or wood. Windows are a good example of this. They were traditionally framed with wood or painted steel, but now there are PVC options that come ready-made. I was initially skeptical about this, but after researching the energy efficiency and standards these PVC windows meet, I realized they're actually a welcome addition to new home building. They reduce on-site installation time, last longer, prevent water leaks, and improve energy efficiency compared to traditional methods.
I've seen some amazing products when it comes to weatherboards. While the benefits might not be as tangible as the window example, they're definitely worth looking into. The biggest advantage I've seen with newer weatherboards is that they don't require maintenance or replacement, unlike traditional timber products that can deteriorate over time.
There's also nothing wrong with sticking to traditional facades. I'd suggest driving around your neighborhood and looking at both new and old houses. Take note of what you like, what has deteriorated, and what you want to avoid. Generally, the materials on the market are great, and there isn't anything I'd specifically warn against.
Questions to ask before choosing a facade
Before choosing a facade, here are some key questions to ask before choosing:
How long is the product warranty?
Will it need maintenance in the next 10 years?
Can I see examples of this material on other homes, and do I like how it looks in real life?
How long will it take to install this material, and is a specialist trade required?
I hope this helps as you choose your facade. You're on the right track by being conscious of your decisions early in your project. :)
Happy building,
Annelyse.
